My background is on Computers and technology and I would like to make a career shift to the Animation Industry. I have heard a lot about Gnomon School. Since I reside in India would online training be a great idea or would it be better that I head to the location and learn?
Online courses are a great way to learn software remotely and the Gnomon online courses are popular for their technical depth and convenience. These classes are a great way to get acclimated to the software, however, if your dream is to work at a top level animation studio, a huge component of your education should be to immerse yourself in an environment that provides exposure to professionals.
Learning the skills is an essential part of landing a job working on films or games- but students sometimes overlook the importance of understanding the inner workings of the industry in order to navigate their education path, network, and market themselves (through a portfolio). The most practical way for you to do this is to surround yourself with current working professionals in an area like LA, where a huge concentration of the industry and talent reside.
I usually recommend the online courses to students who are considering moving to LA to pursue this industry, or as a supplemental means of education due to schedule or geographic limitations.
As amazing as any online course is, it can never replace the benefits of being in a relevant, physical environment where you can form personal relationships with professionals working at your dream studios. I highly recommend starting with an online class or two and considering physical courses after that.
I am the Director of Admissions for Gnomon- If you have any questions or would like to schedule a time to chat over the phone, I'm happy to help you. You can also email me at email@example.com.
